RIDING FOR LIGHTNESS

MODULE 1 NOW AVAILABLE!

TRAINING YOUR HORSE TO RESPOND TO THE LIGHTEST AIDS

3 VIDEO TRAINING MODULES

This course is for everyone. From Pony Club through to dressage and eventing. If you find yourself with a strong, lazy or unresponsive horse this is the course for you. You will learn how you need to ‘think’ about training to improve your horse’s responses AND you will learn all the techniques needed to make your horse light to the leg and hand.

If you have found yourself going leg, leg, leg, leg then be prepared to have everything you knew turned on its head.

Ask yourself — who is responsible for keeping the horse going? If you answered ‘me’ then you have it back to front. It is the horse’s responsibility to keep doing what the rider last told him to do! As a trainer and rider you need to pass that responsibility onto the horse, instead of you ‘filling in’ for your horse’s lack of response with shoving/pushing/kicking etc.

We’ll teach you how to train in the correct responses into your horse and how to test them. We’ll show you what typical mistakes the rider makes which can accidentally ‘untrain’ a horse, so you don’t make the same mistakes too. Added to all of that we provide a forum where you can ask our coaches for help and even upload short videos showing us your problems so we can give you specific help.

MODULE 1

THE BASICS

In this lesson you will the learn the basic principles of lightness & responsiveness. We’ll cover how the horse learns, how we can train the horse and how easily a rider can accidently ‘untrain’ a sensitive horse. You will learn how you can train the horse for lightness in every interaction you have.

We’ll cover the basic groundwork which is a must for training your horse for lightness. This will install the correct aids into your horse on the ground with a light response. You don’t need anything other than you bridle or a head collar for this to work. It works equally well for a bitless or bitted bridle.

You’ll be set homework and can also submit your video homework for marking by our team.

MODULE 2

LIGHTNESS IN RIDING

In this lesson everything you have learned thus far on the ground and in the classroom will be transferred to ridden. We’ll look at halt, rein back, upward transitions and downward transitions using what we call ‘Ridden Groundwork’. This shows you how to transfer everything from the ground to ridden work. You’ll also learn how to deal with horses that hollow to the contact, by adding in some extra details to your groundwork.

We’ll also be covering some of the major mistakes made by riders of all levels when making transitions. We’ll include sections on core strength and how to match the forces of the horse in both downward and upward transitions.

MODULE 3

REFINING LIGHT FOR FLAT WORK

By learning how to shape the responses of horse on the ground, improve its techniques and work over its back you start to change your horse’s movement patterns for the better. We’ll show you exercises for the horse which can profoundly change their ability to work well. You’ll learn how you can use transitions to improve your horse’s attention, and top line. You may have heard before how transitions can help your horse, but they only work if done correctly.

You’ll be given the final key in the series in which you can learn to control the horse’s shoulders and hindquarters. This is an important step for turning and eventual lateral work.

SENIOR RWYM COACH

Ali Wakelin is a fully certified RWYM coach. She has been trained by the world renowned coach and author MARY WANLESS. Ali teaches alongside Mary at clinics on a regular basis at Mary’s Oxfordshire yard.

Ali has also undertaken extensive training in the methods of Dr ANDREW MCLEAN (Australian Equine Behaviour Centre – www.aebc.com.au). Ali is one of very few trainers outside Australia who have trained in this method.

Ali’s methods are suitable for all horses and riders whatever their age, stage of training or type. Ali has trained many different types of horses/riders using this system including members of the British Icelandic Riding Team, British Endurance team riders, TREC competitors, all levels of dressage and many showjumpers. This method also offers longlasting and reproducable training solutions to many behavioural and handling issues such as loading, clipping and spooking.
